Car Leasing for New Businesses and Start-Ups

Starting a business is exciting — but trying to lease a vehicle for it in the first few months can be deeply frustrating. Most mainstream lease companies want 2–3 years of filed accounts and a solid trading history. If you've just registered your company, that's simply not possible. Here's how flexible leasing solves that problem.

Why new businesses struggle with traditional leasing

Traditional lease agreements are finance products. The provider is essentially lending you a depreciating asset and needs confidence they'll be paid for the term. For that, they want audited accounts, confirmation of profitability, and often personal guarantees backed by established credit history.

A company incorporated last month has none of that — even if the director is personally wealthy and the business already has strong order books.

What flexible leasing looks at instead

Specialist flexible lease providers assess the individual and their business situation rather than applying a rigid scoring model. Key factors include:

  • The director's personal credit and financial position
  • The nature of the business (a sole trader consulting firm is very different from a high-risk startup)
  • Proof of income or contracts in place
  • Bank statements showing cash flow
  • The purpose of the vehicle

This means many new businesses — particularly service businesses, contractors, consultants, and tradespeople — can access quality vehicles within days of company registration.

Sole traders vs. limited companies

Both structures can be accommodated. For sole traders, the assessment is essentially personal — your self-employment income, tax returns, and bank statements are the key documents.

For limited companies, directors are often asked to provide a personal guarantee in the early months, which essentially means the provider can look to you personally if the company defaults. This is standard practice and most directors of small businesses are used to it.

Tax advantages for business vehicles

One of the main reasons to put a vehicle through a business is the tax efficiency:

  • VAT-registered businesses can typically reclaim 50% of the VAT on lease payments for a car used partly for business, or 100% if it's an exclusively business-use vehicle.
  • Electric company cars attract a Benefit in Kind (BIK) rate of just 2%, making them extraordinarily tax-efficient for both employer and employee.
  • Van subscriptions can often be treated as a fully deductible business expense.

Always consult your accountant for advice specific to your situation.

Subscription or lease — which is better for a new business?

For a brand new business, a subscription makes most sense initially. Your needs may change quickly — you might need to swap vehicles, add more, or scale back. The monthly flexibility means you can adapt without costly early termination.

As your business matures and your needs stabilise, fixed-term leases become more attractive for their lower monthly cost and predictability.
