Short-Term Car Lease vs. Car Subscription: What's the Difference?

Two of the most popular flexible motoring options in the UK are the short-term car lease and the car subscription. They sound similar — and both are dramatically more flexible than a traditional 3-year PCP or lease — but they work differently and suit different situations. Here's everything you need to know.

What is a short-term car lease?

A short-term car lease is a fixed-term agreement, typically running from 3 to 12 months. You agree to a set contract length upfront, pay an initial rental (usually 1–3 months), and then pay a fixed monthly amount for the duration. Road tax and maintenance are usually included. At the end of the term, you hand the car back.

Because the term is fixed, the monthly rate tends to be lower than a rolling subscription for the same car. The trade-off is that you can't exit early without penalties — your commitment is locked in from day one.

What is a car subscription?

A car subscription is a rolling, month-to-month agreement with a minimum initial period (often 30–90 days). After the minimum term, you give a short notice period — typically 30 days — and hand the car back whenever you're ready. No early termination fees.

Subscriptions include road tax, servicing, and breakdown cover, just like a short-term lease. The monthly rate is usually slightly higher than a fixed lease to reflect the added flexibility.

Key differences at a glance

Commitment: A short-term lease fixes you in for the full term (e.g. 6 months). A subscription requires only a short minimum period, then runs monthly.

Cost: Short-term leases are typically £30–£80/month cheaper for the same vehicle due to the fixed commitment.

Exit: You can't exit a lease early without cost. With a subscription, you give 30 days' notice and you're done.

Initial payment: Leases usually require a larger initial rental (1–3 months). Subscriptions often require just one month upfront.

Which one is right for you?

Choose a short-term lease if you know exactly how long you need the car — for example, waiting for a new car to arrive, covering a fixed-term contract role, or a family needing an extra vehicle for a specific period.

Choose a car subscription if your situation is fluid — you've just moved to the UK, you're between permanent vehicles, your job or life situation could change, or you simply value the peace of mind of being able to hand it back with a month's notice.

Can I switch between them?

Yes. Many customers start on a subscription and then, once they know their timeline, transition to a fixed lease for better value. Equally, if a fixed lease ends and your situation has changed, moving to a rolling subscription gives you time and flexibility to work out your next steps.
